Booker High School honors graduate and Sarasota Family YMCA's Achievers Program participant Carta Robison has accepted a summer internship at Northern Trust.


Booker High School honors graduate Carta Robison with Phil Delaney, President of Northern Trust's Sarasota-Manatee Region.

Robison is completing her sophomore year at Fisk University where she is on the Provost's list. She is a scholarship recipient of the Sarasota Family YMCA Educational Scholarship Program and the daughter of Louis and Yvette Robison of Sarasota.

    The Internship, created by Northern Trust to provide opportunities for students from Sarasota that have distinguished themselves scholastically and as members of the community, began this June.

    "We are thrilled to have Carta partner with us this summer", said Phil Delaney, President of Northern Trust's Sarasota-Manatee Region. "She has really distinguished herself on academic, sports, and leadership fronts at Booker High School, and now at Fisk University."  

The United Way of Manatee County has announced that Publix Supermarkets Charities presented a check for $257,900 at their June Board Meeting. This check marks the completion of the overall Publix Supermarkets donation of over $600,000 for the 2008-2009 Campaign.

Publix Super Markets is the largest contributor to the United Way of Manatee County. Each year Publix runs a United Way Campaign during the fall and secures pledges from its store associates, managers as well as a large matching gift from the Publix supermarkets Charities division.

Mindy Whitehead, Sarasota resident and founder of The Battered Women of Cape Verde Island shelter was honored at a special event in Norwood, Mass in June. 

    Whitehead is a physical therapist at Life Care Center. The shelter was founded two and a half years ago.

 Don Wright owner/operator of over 18 McDonalds franchises presented Whitehead with a van stocked full of items for the shelter to be shipped overseas to Fogo. Wright also presented Whitehead with a large monetary donation to go toward building a new shelter for the battered women.

    Board members of the Battered Women of Cape Verde Island will also be present to solicit donations for the shelter. A strong group effort will provide the means to build and operate the shelter.

    Whitehead founded the shelter after a friend was nearly beaten to death by an act of domestic violence. In an effort to spread awareness about the rights of women in her country, Whitehead is spearheading seminars and community awareness groups to bring domestic violence to an end in her country.

► Accolades

The Friends of the Venice Public Library have been awarded the Non-Profit Business of the Year Award by the Venice Area Chamber of Commerce. Several organizations submitted applications for the award including the Boys and Girls Club of Sarasota County, Habitat for Humanity and United Way of South Sarasota County.

    The Friends provide financial and volunteer support for library programs, materials and other needs not allocated in the county budget.

    The Friends bookstore is located inside the Venice Public Library and offers thousands of inexpensive titles from fiction to cookbooks. They also provide a service that delivers library materials to the homebound within the Venice area community.

Biological Tree Services (BTS) was awarded the Sustainable Florida Small Business Best Practice Award at the Sustainable Florida 11th Annual ceremony in June in Orlando.

    The award winners are chosen as representing the best in sustainability practices in Florida.

    Sustainable Florida is an alliance of business, government and civic leaders and organizations whose mission is to advance the vision of sustainability by identifying, supporting and communicating best management practices.

    Since 1990, Sustainable Florida honors businesses and individuals whose work demonstrates that a healthy environment and a healthy economy are mutually supportive.

     Best Practice winners will also receive special recognition from Governor Crist and the Florida Cabinet at a Cabinet meeting later in the year. Find out more at at www.SustainableFlorida.org. 

 

Connie Toops was recently named School Nurse of the Year by the Florida School Health Association (FSHA). Toops serves as a full-time nurse at Emma E. Booker Elementary School. Formerly a college-level nurse educator, Connie is a subject matter expert on proven ways to provide nursing care services to school-age children. She also serves as a resource to her peers, as well as to other school staff and families. 

 

The Women's Leadership Initiative of the United Way of Manatee County presented checks to the following local non-profits:

  • American Red Cross Whales Tales K-6 Water Safety Training $505.80
  • Community Haven for Adults and Children with Disabilities, Transition services (Teens with Disabilities) $2,000
  • HOPE Family Services— Children's Counseling Program   $1,500
  • Manatee County YMCA Pride Park Juvenile Gang Prevention, Intervention and Suppression $2,000
  • Manatee Education Foundation— Let's Bee Safe $2,000
  • Manatee's Operation Troop Support (running through King Middle) Operation Comfort $2,000

    These programs were selected for funding through WLI's annual grant process.

                The Women's Leadership Initiative's mission is to invest in the youth of the community. WLI strives to engage Manatee County women by using their time and talent to help youth to grow and thrive. WLI was formed in 2004 and has awarded over $25,000 to non-profit groups. ► Appointments and Promotions   

Paula Dumas has been promoted to Senior Vice President of Day Hagan Asset Management (member Raymond James' Independent Advisor Division).

    She was previously associated with the Raymond James office in Venice. Now Dumas has transitioned to the Independent Advisor Division of Raymond James with her main office at Day Hagan Asset Management, 330 S. Julie M. Wills, CFRE, was recently named chief development officer of Girl Scouts of Gulfcoast Florida, Inc., headquartered in Sarasota and having a ten-county jurisdiction. She will be responsible for developing and implementing a new fund development plan including an annual giving campaign, fundraising and cultivation events, and promotional materials as well as public relations and marketing of all facets of Girl Scouting and council facilities.

Wills is a past board member of both the Southwest Florida and Suncoast chapters of AFP. She has also served on the Board of Tampa Bay Planned Giving Council.

    In her most recent work, she served as regional development director for the American Red Cross in the Tampa Bay region. 

    Her prior experience includes serving as director of philanthropy of Manatee Glens in Bradenton, executive director of Florida Prostate Cancer Network, associate executive director of Easter Seals Florida, and division director of the American Heart Association. 

 
The medical practice of Cary L. Dunn, MD, PA, has welcomed Molly Turner as its Director of Marketing. Turner was formerly employed by Fitness Quest Physical Therapy as their Director of Marketing.

Turner will focus on coordinating community outreach, media communications and physician relations for the practice's four southwest Florida clinics in Sarasota, Venice, Arcadia and Boca Grande.

    Turner has been working for the Silverstein Institute as their Physician Liaison where she is in charge of coordinating physician and community outreach. 

    She has also been assisting with event planning for the Ear Research Foundation.  

    Dr. Dunn has been treating skin cancer patients for more than ten years. He is a Board Certified Dermatologist with advanced fellowship training in Mohs Micrographic Surgery.

    His medical team of practitioners includes Shanna Moore, PA-C in Sarasota; Marlie E. Lucas, ARNP-C in Venice and Boca Grande; Joseph Santini, PA-C and Dr. Wael Alokeh in Arcadia.

Clear Channel Radio has promoted Heidi Decker to Program Director for 106.5 WCTQ-FM. Decker will oversee all aspects of the radio station including music, community involvement, and event marketing.

Local graphic designer Felicia Rothberg for the second year in a row, contributed her creative talent to Sarasota's Annual National Cancer Survivors Day (NCSD) celebration held in June at Michael's on East. Felicia designed the look for all of the NCSD materials: the flyer, program, nametags, raffles, and centerpieces. The event honors all cancer survivors, their friends and caregivers, and drew a crowd of 200 celebrants.
